Some stories from the lower Yukon River villages believed that the aurora was the dance of animal spirits, especially those of deer, seals, salmon and beluga. Some tribes said it was the Spirit playing with the skull of a walrus. Cup’ik stories believe the dancing Spirit in the skies had the ability to come down and grab children who were playing out late at night.
